Bill's Best of 2015: NOMINATIONS, PART 2. Comedies, Dramas, and Musicals

Garden of the Gods.  Photo Credit:  Bill Wheeler.  Color enhanced with Photoshop Elements.

NOTE:  This post was edited and updated on January 16, 2016 to correct two errors.  1)  Emma Messenger was nominated for both best and supporting actress (Small Companies) for the same role, and 2) Jacqueline Garcia was nominated for both best and supporting actress (Small Companies) for the same role.  Both actresses will be considered for the Best Actress (Small Companies) for their roles.

I regret the error and apologize for any inconvenience.

A few words first about the 2015 Bill's Best nominations below.

1.  This is a partial listing; Original Work and Holiday shows were posted previously.  If you missed that post, you can find those nominations here.  If you missed my post listing all the eligible shows by company, you will find that list here.

2.  These nominations (and by extension, the awards that will follow) are by their nature subjective.  They reflect my opinion of the shows I saw.  Your opinion may be different from mine, and that's fine.

3.  If you were not nominated, don't despair.  That does not reflect negatively on you, nor should it affect your self esteem.  Picking nominees and winners is VERY difficult for me.  I have to leave out a LOT of great shows and a LOT of memorable performances.

4.  I have not broken out the Comedy category by level.  All companies compete against each other in the Comedy category.  I did this for a couple of reasons.

First, it's a fairly small number of shows (12 total).  Breaking up 12 shows into 3 levels is an average of 4 each, which seemed a little crazy.

Second, I thought it may be a good exercise to test the "acting is acting" theory.  According to this theory, a small budget production should always be able compete with big budget productions, because, well, "acting is acting."  As you will see below, the small budget companies are actually doing quite well against the big budget companies in the Comedy category.  I'm still not convinced that money doesn't matter (it clearly does), but at least for the Comedy category, more money doesn't necessarily seem to make us laugh more.

5.  I understand how much time, energy, and resources go into a production.  The time you must spend to build sets, hang lights, memorize lines, sew costumes, rehearse, and perform is abundant evidence of your dedication and passion.

Your efforts are very much appreciated, even if I criticized your production or didn't nominate your show.  I always try to offer constructive and sensitive criticism rather than an insulting, hostile sound bite.  (For example, "the sound might have been improved with microphones. From my seat, five rows from the back, the sound was muddled at times.")  I know it's difficult to take criticism, but it goes with the territory if you're in the theater community.  And, just so you know, I get a fair amount of criticism too.  I don't like it either, but it's part of my territory too.

6.  I also get a lot of thanks and appreciation from readers, just as companies and performers get a lot of applause, laughs, and standing ovations.  Those things far outweigh the criticism we get.  It's why we all do this.

7.  I am privileged to see so much live theater.  It makes my life better, and for that, all of you in the theater community can be proud of what you do.  I know the tangible rewards are meager, but the intangible ones are better than those in nearly every other line of work.  You make a difference in the lives of countless unknown people who see your work.

8.  I will follow up on these nominations and announce the winners of the 2015 Bill's Best awards by Friday, January 22 (earlier if possible).  I am already dreading the thought of picking winners from such a wide, deep and rich pool of nominations.

9.  If you're still reading (and I hope you are), please take a few moments to congratulate all the folks listed below that you may know, online or in person.  They have worked hard and produced magnificent entertainment.  All I can do is recognize them in a blog post.  You may be able to reach out and actually pat them on the back for me.
